Take a walk in the rain
The best foundation homework costs nothing: put on a rain jacket during a steady storm, or go out within an hour after one, and walk all the way around the house. You are not diagnosing anything — you are collecting what a specialist cannot see on a dry day.
What to look at, from the top down
- The roof edge. Are the gutters carrying water, or is it pouring over the front edge in sheets?
- The downspouts. Where does each one empty? Right at the wall, onto a splash block, or into a pipe that carries it away?
- The ground against the house. Does water run away from the wall, or toward it? Are flower beds holding water like a tray?
- Walks and drives. Does a patio or driveway send water back at the slab?
- The low spots. Where does water stand, and is it still there the next day?
Take short videos as well as photos — moving water shows direction in a way a still picture cannot. Note which side of the house each clip is from.
What the specialist does with it
Your notes and videos go alongside the evaluation findings. If they show water collecting near the part of the house that has moved, drainage will likely be on the quote as its own line.
